On January 31, the interns, residents, and fellows at the University of New Mexico voted overwhelmingly to join together in the formation of a housestaff union affiliated with the Committee of Interns and Residents, a national union representing intern and resident physicians across the country. This election marked the culmination of an organizing campaign initiated by UNM housestaff last fall in the hopes of uniting to achieve lasting improvements for ourselves and our patients.
Now that we have officially established ourselves as a union, our attention turns toward negotiating our first contract with the hospital administration. As a negotiating partner with the hospital administration, we are confident that this process will yield results that will benefit both our programs and our ability to care for our patients.
