CIR & UNM Reach Agreement, 8/2/07

On August 2, 2007 at 10:30PM after 5 months of negotiating sessions, the CIR negotiating committee and UNM reached agreement for a 2 year union contract, termed Aug. 1, 2007 thru Aug. 31, 2009. 

The Contract Bargaining Team is recommending a YES! vote on the agreement.

The ratification vote will take place on August 15th.  Below are some highlights of the new CIR Housestaff Contract:

New salary rates effective upon ratification of the new contract as follows:
• PGY 1: $39,661.00 increased 5.3 % to $41,773.00
• PGY 2: $40,661.00 increased 5.8 % to $43,015.00
• PGY 3: $41,661.00 increased 7.6% to $44,825.00
• PGY 4: $42,661.00 increased 9.3% to $46,608.00
• PGY5:  $43,661.00 increased 10.3% to $48,155.00
• PGY 6: $45,398.00 increased 10 % to $49,937.00

In April 2008 we will “re-open” the contract to negotiate further salary increases.  Also to be included in the contract is a “side-letter” from the Dean stating the intent of UNM is to raise the interns, residents and fellows to the 50th percentile in the Western Region in salaries during the 2008-2009 academic year.

• Increase in the Meal allowance to $4.50 per meal along with a minimum of $200.00 to be placed on all resident meal cards

• Patient Care Fund: $25,000.00 in 2007-2008 and $25,000.00 in 2008-2009 for residents to use to purchase patient care-related items and equipment for the hospital. 

• 2 residents to be appointed to voting members of the UNM Capital Committee, which decides on UNM equipment budget

• 2 weeks paid maternity/paternity leave

• Tuition Reimbursement at UNM for residents taking courses towards an advanced degree in a health related field or towards professional/career development

• Health Insurance: Guarantee of current health care benefits with a cap on the Administration’s ability to increase resident-paid health premium rates by no more than 5% over the life of the agreement

• 7 paid holidays with the option of receiving time and a half for hours worked on a holiday or an alternate day off during the life of your residency

• Medical Education Bonus of $450.00 per resident per year with the ability of rolling over unused funds from one year to the next.  In addition, language that states individual departments may in their discretion provide medical education benefits greater than the minimum of $450.00 per resident per year. 

• Taxi Reimbursement if residents are too tired to drive home post-call from the hospital

• Labor-Management Committee Meetings for residents to meet with UNM administration to discuss issues and concerns of UNM housestaff.  Examples of issues to be discussed: call rooms, security, meals at night, patient-care issues

• Six CIR bulletin boards throughout the hospital for CIR news and updates
